The UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office has cautioned its citizens in Nigeria against traveling to Kogi and Bayelsa state ahead of the governorship elections on November 16 2019.
A statement on the UK government website warned against travel to those states because of election related violence.

The FCO also advised against all but essential travel to Bauchi State, Zamfara State, Kano State, Kaduna State, Jigawa State, Katsina State, Kogi State, non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers State and Abia State.
The statement reads, “Local elections for governor will take place on November 16 in Bayelsa and Kogi states.
“Travel into and movement within the states will be restricted on election day.

“There have been reports of politically related violence and deaths in recent days.
“If you’re in these areas or decide to travel, you should continue to avoid large gatherings, follow the advice of local authorities and use local radio and TV to stay updated on the current security situation.
“A peaceful demonstration took place on 2 September 2019 outside the British High Commission in Abuja and further demonstrations are possible. If you’re planning on visiting the High Commission, you should monitor the local media or get in touch with your contact in the Mission. If you’re in the area near the High Commission, you should avoid any demonstrations.

“Before considering travel to areas to which the FCO advise against all or all but essential travel you should take professional security advice. Be vigilant at all times, keep others informed of your travel plans and vary your routines. If you’re working in Nigeria you should follow your employer’s security advice, make sure your accommodation is secure and review your security measures regularly.
“Consular support is offered in Nigeria although limited in areas where the FCO advise against all or all but essential travel.”
